According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Manchester United is looking to improve its midfield options this summer and has identified Mateo Kovacic of Chelsea as a possible target.
The former Real Madrid midfielder’s contract at Stamford Bridge is about to expire, and according to Football Insider, negotiations for a new deal have broken down.
The 29-year-old initially moved to Chelsea on loan in 2018 before making the switch permanently. He has overseen 220 games for the Blues across all competitions and has been a crucial member of the team in recent years.
Chelsea will undergo a significant summer makeover under Mauricio Pochettino, with the club looking to offload a number of first-team players.
Due to his contract situation, Kovacic is one of those who could be released, and the Red Devils are closely watching his situation. According to Football Insider, Man United could submit a bid for the Croatian international, whose signing would cost the Blues at least £30 million.
excellent addition
Kovacic appears to be considering leaving Chelsea this summer. Dean Jones, a transfer insider, previously asserted that Kovacic is aware that, should he decide to leave Stamford Bridge, he will be presented with some sizable offers.
At Chelsea, Pochettino’s main task will be to trim down the bloated roster. The team will undoubtedly be reduced, and the club may need to sell Kovacic to make room for new recruits.
In their midfield, Man United must improve, especially if Scott McTominay leaves the team. The Red Devils will probably spend a lot of money on a top-notch striker, which may reduce their transfer budget for other positions.
Kovacic is a player with a tonne of experience who will be reasonably priced. If a deal could be reached, getting Kovacic on board would be a wise move for United rather than going after players like Declan Rice or Moises Caicedo.
