At one point, Microsoft was betting a lot of money on a future based largely on streaming entertainment. And that’s because one of its previous gaming consoles, the Xbox One, was effectively crippled from the start due to Microsoft’s vision for the future. However, things did not go as planned, and Microsoft is now back on track with the Xbox Series S and Series X. However, this does not imply that the company would also have decided to give up on that specific dream.

And it turns out that we wouldn’t have been too far away from seeing a finished product. According to a recent report by Windows Central, Microsoft continues to remain busy working on a cloud streaming device. This means it isn’t a replacement for the Xbox Series S or Series X (yet), but yet another product in the category lineup.

Whereas Microsoft will indeed be focusing on streaming content from a number of different services, this will allow people who enjoy playing video games to do so. Essentially, it will grant people access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, allowing them to play console-level games without the need for an entire video game console.

Microsoft has confirmed that it is matter of fact working on the project, which is currently codenamed “Keystone.” One would expect it to lose that title by the moment this becomes a real product that people can buy.

The report is short on details, which is understandable. A Microsoft spokesperson did confirm, however, that Microsoft’s gaming division is committed to bringing “low-cost hardware” to commercialize at some point in the future. According to the spokesperson, the future cloud streaming device would be mainly universal, able to link to any TV or monitor as well as bring streaming (both video and gaming) to the people.

According to the report, Microsoft has already been starting to work on this streaming device, that would technically be a competitor to the Apple TV 4K, for at least a few years. However, the exact date of its launch is unknown at this time.

And here’s where we’ll add that rumor has it that Apple is also working on a less pricey Apple TV streaming device. To be honest, this has been a long time in the making, and it barely qualifies as “better late than never.” Apple has been dormant on this for quite some time, so here’s hoping for a less expensive Apple TV.

So, who is purchasing a low-cost Microsoft cloud streaming service?
