A new development has been made in relation to Manchester United’s rumoured interest in Mason Mount, the Chelsea contract rebel.
What has changed about Mount and Manchester United?
The 24-year-old Englishman is “leaning towards” a transfer to Old Trafford with just one year remaining on his current contract, according to The Telegraph’s James Ducker. The Red Devils are reportedly preparing an offer worth around £50 million for the player.
Mason Mount (name spelt right this time) is the target of a £50 million proposal from #MUFC, according to a tweet from Ducker. Chelsea was anticipating higher demands. Though unclear about his future at United, Fred is planned conversations with Ten Hag.
The reputable writer continued, writing with colleague Jason Burt for The Telegraph, that despite the present price differential between United and the Blues, there is “growing confidence” among people at United that a deal for the 36-cap ace can be reached.
What United player might Mount replace?
Although Ducker mentioned the “uncertainty” surrounding Fred’s future at the Theatre of Dreams amid rumours that the Brazilian could be moving to Fulham, the 30-year-old may not be the only player to suffer as a result of Mount’s arrival; Donny van de Beek is also likely to find himself further down the pecking order.
During his tenure at United, Van de Beek has often played in an advanced playmaking role similar to the Chelsea player, despite the fact that the Dutchman has had a dismal three-year stint due to his inability to establish himself as a regular in the team.
During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at the club, the 25-year-old was brought in from Ajax back in the summer of 2020. Since then, he has started just 23 games in all competitions, scoring just twice and providing just two assists.

Even with the addition of fellow countryman Erik ten Hag, the Dutch international’s most recent campaign proved to be rather dismal as he made just ten appearances before going down with a season-ending injury in January. According to recent reports, the £40 million player may be among those who leave this summer.
Therefore, the addition of Mount might be the deciding factor in Van de Beek’s demise, since his fellow playmaker has already established himself as a far more powerful force in the Premier League, having surpassed double digits in both goals and assists in the top division during the 2021/22 season.
The Portsmouth-born star, a former Derby County loanee, nonetheless contributed with three goals and six on all fronts while Van de Beek was unable to contribute with even a single goal involvement. Despite not being able to repeat that achievement this time, he did contribute to six goals overall.
The acquisition of a “mad player” like Mount, as acclaimed by club great Rio Ferdinand, might prove to be an undeniable improvement for Ten Hag, since journalist Samuel Luckhurst has previously stated that using the latter man just “doesn’t work.”
Van de Beek may thus have to bid farewell if a deal for the Three Lions diamond does materialise.
