Real Madrid is preparing to contact Chelsea as a £72 million trade is feasible this summer.
The Blues are getting set for a new era under Mauricio Pochettino, and his first task will be to cut down the overstuffed team that owner Todd Boehly has put together over the previous 12 months. Under their new ownership, Chelsea have added talent worth almost £600 million, yet there is a serious shortage of offensive firepower at Stamford Bridge.
Karim Benzema’s departure from the Bernabeu has been confirmed by Real Madrid, creating a vacancy in their assault.
Los Blancos, who want to return the £72 million they spent, are reportedly eyeing Kai Havertz to replace the legendary French No. 9, according to the German publication Bild.
When he joined the west Londoners in 2020, Havertz broke the club’s record for a signing. However, he has had trouble integrating into the team under several managers, appearing most frequently as a lone striker. Although his goal scoring ability has been critiqued (he has scored 32 goals in 139 games), reports of Bayern Munich’s interest in him have persisted.
The German has been deemed a good substitute for Benzema by Real manager Carlo Ancelotti, according to Bild, who are optimistic that the transfer will soon be finalised.
Harry Kane is reportedly also of interest to Real, and Pochettino will have an instant substitute for Havertz thanks to Christopher Nkunku’s impending transfer to Chelsea.
According to CBS Sports transfer analyst Ben Jacobs, “Nkunku is joining from RB Leipzig – that was pre-arranged and has never been in doubt,” FourFourTwo on June 1. Romelu Lukaku returning from Inter since that is where he prefers to stay makes it improbable that Chelsea would employ him as a No. 9 striker.
Transfermarkt places a $60 million value on Havertz.
