According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Manchester United will submit a formal offer for Inter Milan custodian Andre Onana in the coming hours.
With David de Gea’s contract set to expire tomorrow, the Red Devils are looking to replace him during the current transfer window.
To replace the Spaniard, Onana is their top target, and according to La Repubblica, the Red Devils will make a bid for the 27-year-old in the “next few hours.”
The Cameroonian has already spoken with United through his agent, and a verbal agreement has been reached regarding a long-term contract, it is added.
Inter currently places a $60 million value on their prized possession. They believe that by adding a number of bonuses, the Red Devils will come close to the target.
Onana De Gea has been United’s primary custodian for the past 12 seasons, but the Spaniard may be headed for the exit door after the contract drama in recent weeks.
The 32-year-old originally agreed to a contract extension with a significant pay cut, but United reneged on the deal and now wants to offer an even smaller salary.
De Gea has no intention of taking the most recent offer that has been made. As things stand, when his contract expires at the end of June, he might sign with another team as a free agent.
Our opinion is that United has disrespected the legendary custodian, but it might be time to call it quits. The team needs to upgrade its middle of the field.
Over the past year, De Gea’s goalkeeping has been inconsistent. Despite keeping 25 clean sheets last season, he committed four errors that directly contributed to goals.
He appeared vulnerable with his distribution from the back as well, though. Numerous times, the Spaniard gave the opposition cheap possession.
Next season, Onana would be a fantastic improvement over De Gea. He is one of the best goalkeepers at handling the ball and enjoys making frequent, strong claims in the box.
The Cameroonian can work as a sweeper-keeper and is also very mobile. Having played four years of Ajax under Ten Hag, he should have no trouble adjusting to his playing style.
Therefore, Onana is a no-brainer acquisition for the Red Devils, who ought to sign him as soon as possible so that he can take part in the preseason tour.
