Manchester United fans resumed their revolts against the Glazer family near the end of the season, also during club’s Premier League match against Norwich City. Even after collapse of the European Super League in 2021, promises were made to the fans in a charter; a collapse caused in part by the actions of the fans, whose protests resulted in the postponement of the match against Liverpool.
The massive protest saw fans encircling Old Trafford before the game, with some even getting on the field. The game was postponed as a result, and the European Super League concept was abandoned a few days later.
It appears that promises such as Old Trafford improvements will be fulfilled, but one of the important clauses, that fan base would be given shareholdings in the team and a say in Utd’s planning, has not been fulfilled. As a result, fanbases such as ‘The 1958’ have called for more action.
Recent fan activities also include a move from Man utd pub The Tollgate to Old Trafford, deciding to stay outside the surface for 17 minutes after start before entering, and some fans leaving the stands early in the season finale against Brentford. Anti-Glazer chants were also extremely common during this time period.
However, as the season comes to a close, ‘The 1958’ seriously thinks that the case against United’s ownership cannot be limited to a single matchday. To that end, they’ve announced an online campaign aimed at the club’s sponsors, with the goal of reducing the efficiency of their advertising.
Adidas was the first target of the campaign, which began this week. When United’s cooperation with Nike come to an end in 2014-15, the club signed a new 10-year deal with Adidas which would cost the sports-fashion company £750 million over the course of the contract.
‘#BoycottAdidas’ started trending on Twitter, which was one of the forms ‘The 1958’ hoped to catch the sponsor’s attention. Other measures will include flooding the comments sections of posts on social media with anti-Glazer propaganda, as well as articles that portray the brand negatively; according to the plan, they would not be the first company to face this type of action.
