Liverpool are expected to receive a formal bid next month, and it appears increasingly likely that it will come from Qatar, after Mo Salah was seen meeting with QSI head Nasser bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi.

An Egyptian journalist, Ismael Mahmoud, reported on Twitter that the latter intends to make the forward “one of the pillars of the Qatar project with Liverpool” ahead of a rumored takeover.

Given the club’s obvious opposition to a joint venture with a state entity, and given the Reds’ values and morally competent fan base, any bid in February appears likely to come from the private sector.

The rebuild job alone requires a higher level of investment than FSG may be able to provide, so a change in hands would be extremely beneficial ahead of the summer window.

Having said that, even bids from the private sector are problematic given the inevitable ties to the state and its questionable human rights record.

Of course, none of this matters until we learn how QSI intends to circumvent UEFA regulations, which state that the same entity cannot own two clubs in the same competition (Champions League).
