With their strength in depth causing their levels to dip towards the end of the current season, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is eager to continue his rebuild at the club by making a few summer signings ahead of next season.
Adrien Rabiot, a midfielder for Serie A giants Juventus, has reportedly been offered a contract by United, according to RMC Sport (via the Daily Mail). Rabiot would be a great addition to Ten Hag’s team.
However, it appears the Dutchman has a backup plan in place that will see the Red Devils make a move for Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Kouadio Kone in the event that a deal cannot be reached between the two parties.
United may have to spend at least €40 million (£35 million) to sign the player, which is well within Ten Hag’s means.
Could Kouadio Kone be acquired by Man United this summer?
Since his contract won’t expire until 2025, Gladbach will try to get the highest price when selling him.
United shouldn’t be discouraged, though, as his potential suggests that they might be able to get a good deal on him.
With Gladbach currently in 11th place in the Bundesliga and having only won ten league games all season, it is possible that several stars will want to leave this summer, with Kone probably being one of them.
In his 29 league games this season, Kone ranks fourth in the team for accurate passes (39.4) and interceptions (one), fifth for key passes (0.7), and first for successful dribbles per game (1.9), demonstrating how crucial he is to the current squad despite their disappointing season.
Jacek Kulig, a football talent scout, praised the midfielder, calling him “fantastic” and a “one-man army” after he put on a strong performance against Bayern Munich in February. If he can continue to play like that against one of the best clubs in Europe, he will fit in at the Premier League team with ease.
One of his main advantages is his ability to drive forward and engage defenders. In Europe’s top five leagues over the past 365 days, Kone ranks in the top 4% for take-ons attempted and successful per 90, and he ranks in the top 2% for drawing fouls with 2.59 per 90, suggesting that Ten Hag would be bringing in a midfielder who frequently looks to push towards the opposition goal.
Kone, who is six years younger than Rabiot, might be a better long-term choice than the Frenchman, and the upcoming weeks will be crucial for any potential move.
