We previously discussed claims from Portugal that Chelsea was going to make Manuel Ugarte a second offer.
The only way Sporting would have agreed to trade the midfielder was if the London club had offered to pay more than his €60 million release clause. However, PSG was also prepared to pay the same amount and had given Ugarte a much better compensation package than the Premier League team.
There were indications that Chelsea’s upcoming pay offer, albeit it would still be less than what the French club had proposed, may be accepted.
That’s because Ugarte wants to play in English football, and it seems like his ambition has benefited Chelsea.
Saturday night, the Record reported that Ugarte had decided to sign with Chelsea. The Portuguese publication reports that the “deal is closed” and treats it as a foregone conclusion.
Given that, it is likely that an announcement will soon be made.
As we mentioned earlier today, Chelsea’s upgraded offer was for €3.5 million, while PSG’s salary offer was for €5 million; both amounts were probably after taxes.
In addition to PSG, Chelsea outbid many other Premier League teams that had been interested in this signing recently.
