Barcelona has done reasonably well in terms of transfers arriving this summer despite their financial limitations. Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez were signed on as free agents, and Vitor Roque appears destined to sign with the team soon after.

Oriol Romeu is now the target of the Blaugrana. Recently, they have been in talks with Girona about bringing the former youth player back to the team. Romeu is viewed by Xavi Hernandez as a fantastic short-term replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Although there have been some setbacks along the way, Barcelona may soon sign the former Southampton star, according to Gerard Romero.

According to the journalist, Barça should close the Romeu transaction this week or next. Even though the Girona midfielder wasn’t at the top of the club’s wishlist, this should be a huge relief for Barcelona supporters.

Xavi is aware that Romeu was not the preferred replacement for Busquets in the club’s eyes. But he wants to close the deal quickly so that he can use the player right away.

Romeu’s defensive prowess, experience, and leadership may come in handy for Barcelona next season, giving attack-minded midfielders Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi, and new addition Gundogan more freedom.

The deal is still far from being finalised. Barcelona and Girona still need to agree on transfer fees. According to reports, the midfielder was going to cost around €8 million, but it seems Barcelona is trying to cut the price of the transaction by including players in the deal.

Even though Barcelona is unlikely to approve a permanent sale for either of the three, Estanis Pedrola, Nico Gonzalez, and Pablo Torre are among the players who could move the other way.

In either case, a deal between the two clubs is likely to be reached soon, and the transfer is likely to happen this week or next.
