Oriol Romeu, a midfielder for Girona, was permitted to travel to Barcelona for a medical in order to finalise a transfer to Camp Nou, but he is not participating in Monday’s team workout.

Barcelona is looking to Romeu, a former star of La Masia, to fill the void left by the departure of captain Sergio Busquets.

The two Catalan sides have been in talks for weeks, and according to numerous reports in Spain, a deal has been reached. Barcelona will reportedly pay the 31-year-old about €5 million plus add-ons.

In order to sweeten the deal, Barcelona is also anticipated to loan Girona young midfielder Pablo Torre.

Romeu has reportedly been excused from practise and has travelled to Barcelona’s practise facility to undergo a medical and sign a contract, according to Gerard Romero.

Romeu is anticipated to join Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez as Barcelona’s third signing of the summer, assuming everything goes as planned.

Romeu excelled for Barcelona’s B team and managed two senior appearances, both of which occurred during the 2010–11 Pep Guardiola season. Romeu left Barcelona for Chelsea in 2011.

Romeu was initially named on the bench alongside current Blaugrana manager Xavi, who did not play, for his lone La Liga appearance against Deportivo La Coruna towards the end of the season.

Romeu will be joined by a second midfielder, according to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, and a new right back is also high on Xavi’s wish list.
