According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool may try to take advantage of Barcelona’s desire to offload Dutch international Frenkie de Jong.
During the summer transfer window, Frenkie de Jong was frequently mentioned in connection with a transfer to Manchester United. The Dutchman was not interested in transferring to Old Trafford, even though the two teams were able to agree on a transfer deal.
Erik ten Hag, his previous manager, was anxious to bring in the player before the transfer window closed. It appears that the former Ajax manager is still passionate in bringing de Jong to Old Trafford. Liverpool, Manchester United’s bitter rivals, may present a challenge.
The Reds have fewer resources than Manchester United, therefore it may come down to whose team can compete on an equal footing.
No one can deny Liverpool’s urgent need to strengthen their midfield. It will also be intriguing to watch to see whether they opt to sign de Jong during the January transfer window.
Thiago Alcantara, a former Barcelona midfielder, and Naby Keita, an intriguing Barcelona target, both experienced injury issues since joining Liverpool. James Milner and Jordan Henderson are also not the same players they once were. Arthur Melo, a summer acquisition, is also out indefinitely due to an injury.
If the Reds want to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League, they must try to sign a top central midfielder in January. The predicament of De Jong at Barcelona and the readiness of the Catalan club could help Liverpool sign him for a reasonable price.
